How it Started

In the beginning...

2024

... there were weeds. Lots of weeds. And slugs. So many slugs!

There was also rhubarb. Slug-infested rhubarb.

Since I didn't get the plot until after the main growing season, I didn't bother with it until the start of spring. That was a mistake. I should have dug it over and let the frost kill off some of the weed roots and break up the soil.

Now I know even in the winter, there is work to be done.

So I began clearing the plot in early spring, starting with rescuing the shed from the brambles that were trying to devour it.

When I first announced to family and friends that I had an allotment, there were several offers of help to cultivate it. No such help materialised. I soon realized that I would have to brave this wilderness alone.

The following images show progress made in two months. It's slow, but enjoyable.

Digging

I have a few small sections ready for planting.

Growing

Salad Leaves. The first lot were eaten by slugs overnight.

Carpeting

Technically, the shed is classed as "indoors", so who cares?

Where I spend most of my time.

Some of the rotten carpet dug up from the plot.

I'm no ornithologist, but think this is called a bird.

Slow-worms are supposed to eat slugs. If he had any, I'd tell him to pull his finger out.
